The new level of Kaldheim, as well as the set based on it, is influenced by Viking and Norse mythology and features a top-down design in which the theme "determines the cards and powers of the set." The plain "is home to elves, dwarves, Valkyrie angels, changelings, giants and Viking-like human berserkers.

The planeswalker Kaya visits the plane when the gods of Kaldheim's worlds travel between them to fight for control and influence, according to the set's plot. However, if someone can combine their power into a single, powerful weapon, the endless war could come to an end.

Boast and Prediction are two new mechanics added by Kaldheim, neither of which are limited to a specific tribe.

A Kaldheim display has 12 collector boosters and each Kaldheim collector booster contains 15 playable cards:

1 Rare or Mythic with extended artwork
1 foil Rare or Mythic
9 foile commons or uncommons
3 special-frame cards like Showcase cards or Borderless Planeswalkers
1 additional card that belongs to this set but cannot be found in other boosters (such as the Buy-a-Box Promo)
